It has been 145 days since Ontario shut everything down due to Covid-19. Crazy right? It feels like it has been a lifetime! Our numbers have been low for a few weeks now. We have pretty much opened up the whole province, with mandatory mask wearing and social distancing. The latest announcement has been the plan to re-open our schools in September, which has been met with a lot of mixed views and emotions. Some families are choosing to not send their children in September and some are. Others don’t have a choice, as many families, have both parents working. You are able to go into a restaurant to eat now, although I personally don’t know anyone who has done this. Some companies are still working from home but most have returned back. Unfortunately, we have seen a number of stores shut their doors as they couldn’t hold on during the lock down.

I was reading up on the 1918 pandemic and was surprised that even over 100 years ago the public had the same views and reactions as they do today……

– There was a group of anti-mask wearers and protestors against the government.

– There were those who abided and stayed indoors.

-There were those who were thankful for the bell telephone in order to keep in touch with loved ones. The same as we have said about social media today.

-There were those who didn’t believe that the virus existed and that the government had a hidden agenda.

Crazy to realize that even though we have progressed so much over the last 100 years, opinions in general haven’t changed all that much. Everyone has a right to their own opinion and even in my household we have differing beliefs, and that’s okay. I have watched people argue with loved ones, friends, and complete strangers over these views, what a waste of precious time. Remember, if we all thought the same way, life would be a very boring place to be. Just be sure to respect each others beliefs.

* I am constantly reminding myself that we didn’t shut everything down to get rid of the virus, but to prepare our health care system to deal with the pandemic. *

So, here’s to the next steps of opening up Ontario. Let’s pray that our numbers remain low and that the second wave does not come.

stay safe, stay healthy

  1. very good! Can’t believe that our views of government has not changed since 1918. I would have hoped that we would have learned to be more compasionate towards other people sad that some people still think only about themselves first.
