As I write this, it is 30 months until I turn 60 years old. This made me realize that I need to make some changes to my life, from the current way I am living, in order to make sure I have optimal health into my senior years.
I was going to work every day and then coming home, sitting down and scrolling my phone. I was eating fast food and take out as it was convenient, instead of coming home and cooking or packing a lunch for the next day. My excuse was I worked all day and I was tired.
The first thing I incorporated was a little challenge for myself of getting 10,000 steps in a day at minimal. I wear a Garmin watch and connected it with family. This family connection helped to make sure that those steps were in with fun little challenges amongst each other.
Second, after I started to be successful with the steps, I joined yoga at a small community centre here in my town. I started with once a week and then increased to twice a week. I used to say I was too tired to go back out after working all day but now I find I look forward to going and can’t wait for the yoga days.
Third, I cut out sweets. Sweets are my downfall.. since being mindful of my sugar intake I have really noticed how much sweets are all around us. Someone is always bringing in cake or cookies to the lunchroom at work or if there is a lunch it usually includes some sort of cakes for after the meal. Walk around the grocery store and all kinds of sweets are displayed everywhere you look enticing you.
I feel so much better already and hope I can continue keeping up these new habits. I found it easier by not trying to do them all at once but after getting used to one step then adding another. I hope to keep adding healthy habits as I go on. I love to read and also listen to podcasts so being mindful of what I am reading and listening to will be next on my list. keeping the brain active is also important as the body.
